GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play today with an impressive doubleheader sweep of rival Aquinas College. DU used a 10-run outburst in the opener to win by mercy in six innings 10-2 and then got a 3-hit shutout from Kyleigh Linebaugh and Sam Cole to defeat the Saints 7-0 in the nightcap. The Panthers, now 19-8-1 on the season and 2-0 in league action, will host Siena Heights on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Amber Getty continued her hot streak at the plate as the junior extended her hitting streak to 10 games by finishing the DH 3-6 with four runs scored, three RBI and she remained tied for the team-lead with her seventh homerun. Sophomore Ashleigh Blovksy matched her in the HR total as she went deep for the first time since March 15 while Carli SanMillan had five hits on the day and KC Dunne and Paige Sant'Angelo each had three.

Game 1 – W, 10-2 (6)

Davenport wasted no time in getting the scoring started against their rival as KC Dunne connected for an RBI double scoring Getty. Sant'Angelo then followed with an RBI and DU took a 2-0 lead into the bottom half as they played the DH as the visiting team with the Saints originally scheduled to host. The Panthers added to their lead in the third when sophomore Karli Myers tripled home SanMillan and Sant'Angelo and the lead continued to grow in the frame on RBI from Melissa Covert and Sarah Schneidenbach.

Looking to post a mercy in their WHAC opener, DU got a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth from Ashleigh Blovksy to open a 10-0 lead and it was more than enough support for DU starter Sam Cole who, despite allowing two runs in the bottom of the sixth, closed out her 13th win and third shutout by finishing with three strikeouts.

The win marked the fourth straight year that DU has opened conference play with a win.

Game 2 – W, 7-0

Freshman Kyleigh Linebaugh was outstanding on the mound for the Panthers as she picked up her fifth win of the season by going five innings and allowing just three hits and striking out one batter. She combined with Cole to post the shutout as the two allowed a combined six base runners in the seven innings.

The Panthers got a leg up in the top of the first when Ashleigh Blovsky singled home KC Dunne after a misplaced ball by the Saints' defender. The lead doubled in the third when Paige Sant'Angelo scored on a wild pitch and then Amber Getty blasted a her fourth homerun in in the last eight games in the fourth scoring Bri Elliott.

Getty would add her third RBI of the game in the sixth which was followed by  a two-run triple from Sarah Schneidenbach that scored both Getty and Debra Burton to finish the scoring.
