ADRIAN, Mich. –
Cam Cooper had three hits and scored three times as he guided the Davenport baseball to an 8-4 game one victory over Siena Heights, but the Saints used a two-run double as well as an RBI single to salvage a 3-0 game two win to split the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers return home to entertain Rochester College in a doubleheader at the Farmers Athletic Complex Thursday at 2 p.m.
Cooper also stretched a double to one of his three-hit afternoon and
Michael Allen continued to drive in the runs at the cleanup spot as the senior catcher knocked in his team-leading 17
th and 18
th on the year in game one.
Game One
Davenport (15-10, 4-4 WHAC) went to work right away on Saints starter Thomas McCarter (1-2).
Cam Cooper was hit by the pitch to start the game advanced to third on a stolen base and a pop up.
Michael Allen brought him home when he hit a single to right. Courtesy runner
Andrew Kawam would steal second and score on Edward Grochowalski Jr.'s single to right center.
After
Jordan Schumann walked, the Panthers added two more runs on back-to-back singles by
Eric Cummings and
Tyler Berger and would take a 5-0 lead on a double steal.
Although the Saints (6-12, 3-5 WHAC) scored a run in their opening frame, McCarter would run into trouble again in the second inning. With Cooper at third,
Carlos Berroa at second,
Jotham Woo would bring a run in on a groundout and Allen followed with a RBI single through the left side to extend Davenport's lead to 7-1.
The eighth run came in the sixth inning with runners in the corners. Berroa would distract the Saints by attempting to steal second while Cooper scored on the throw.
Michael Clutterbuck (3-3) bounced back from a tough loss last week as the junior threw 5 1/3, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks.
Ryan Butzer went the rest of the way throwing a one-hit performance for his third save of the year.
Game Two
Despite throwing five innings,
Danny Sullivan (3-2) suffered the loss after allowing all three runs in the second. The Saints used a leadoff walk followed by three straight hits, including a two-run double, to take a 2-0 lead. Sullivan would strikeout the next two batters but another single brought in the third run.
All of Davenport's four hits in the game were singles but it had opportunities to bring runs in. Cooper was able to steal third base with two out in the first inning but the Panthers couldn't find the clutch hit to drive him in.
