FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Davenport baseball team broke a scoreless tie in the ninth to win the pitching duel 1-0 and went on to stop Indiana Tech's rally in the ninth of game two to post a 6-4 victory to complete the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference series sweep Saturday afternoon. With the win in game one, the Panther secured second place in the standings and will compete in the WHAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday at the Farmers Athletic Complex.
Davenport (35-12, 18-6 WHAC) kept the Warriors (28-15, 17-9 WHAC) bats cool by tossing 28 shutout frames from the start of the series. On the other side,
Jotham Woo was the only Panther to hit for extra bases as he stretched two doubles while driving in a pair of RBI on the day.
Carlos Berroa had two hits and RBI each while
Cam Cooper,
Jordan Schumann and
Michael Allen also produced multiple singles.
Game One – Davenport 1, Indiana Tech 0
The Panthers couldn't find a way to score a run with Aaron Lewellyn on the mound. The Warrior tossed eight shutout innings and only Berroa, Cooper and Allen earned the right to be on base with a single. Davenport had three innings with golden opportunities to score. In the second, Woo found his way to third with a walk, a bunt and a fly out to right, but the Panthers couldn't find a way to bring him home.
In the third, Cooper drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and although Allen reached on a fielder's choice, Cooper tried to score but was caught in a rundown between third and home.
Like the Panthers, the Warriors also had golden opportunities to blow the game wide open.
Zach Liebman surrendered three hits, including a double, a hit-by-pitch while striking out four in four innings of work.
Ryan Butzer (2-1) came out of the bullpen in the fifth and quickly got himself into a jam as a single and a hit batsman put a runner in scoring position. He was able to escape the threat with the help of a failed sacrifice bunt and a double play. Butzer went on to throw four innings and allowing four hits and a walk.
The first and only run in the game came in the ninth. Woo drew a lead-off walk and found his way to third when Berger's sacrifice bunt caused a throwing error by the pitcher and Schumann's one-out single brought in the run.
Colton Satterlee was asked to save the game and although an error and a walk moved the tying run into scoring position, the Warriors wasted an out on a failed sacrifice bunt and a fly out followed by a ground out secure the win for Davenport.
Game Two – Davenport 6, Indiana Tech 4
Game two was quite the opposite as Davenport quickly jumped on the board in the first. Cooper opened the game with a single up the middle, Dennis was hit by the pitch and Allen reached on a throwing error to load the bases. Grochowalski brought the first run in with an RBI single and Berroa added two to the board with a two-run single.
After being forced to put zeros on the board throughout the series, the Warriors finally got on the board in the fourth when a one-out double, a RBI triple and a RBI single cut the lead down to one.
Davenport regained the three-run lead back in the fifth. Dennis led off with a single and reached third on Allen's double before Woo found an open gap in right center for a two-run double.
An insurance run was cashed in the sixth when Kawam reached on a walk, moved to third on a passed ball followed by a groundout and scored on Cooper's single to center.
The insurance run proved to be worthy as the Warriors were able to get a run across in the sixth and seventh.
Despite being the victim of seven base hits, including two doubles and a triple,
Michael Clutterbuck (6-4) went 5.2 innings and surrendered only three runs, two earned.
Corey Anderson helped the starter get out of a threat in the sixth with a runner at second before Satterlee was asked to shut the door in the seventh for his fifth save.
