GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On their day Sunday, Davenport senior pitchers
Zach Liebman (game one) and
Drew Sain (game two) were unbreakable as they both took no-hit bids into the late innings but finished the day surrendering only one hit in Davenport's, 4-0, 2-0 doubleheader victory over Lourdes. With the pair of victories, Davenport completes the four-game Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference series sweep and improves to 28-12 overall, 13-6 in the league.
Liebman (4-0) and Sain (4-0) were one of seven seniors honored in between games, including
Jotham Woo,
Michael Allen,
Corey Anderson,
Garrett Lovik and
Colton Satterlee.
Allen had a productive day with the bat Sunday. Although he didn't drive in a run, he did go 5-for-7 on the afternoon with a pair of doubles in game two.
Cam Cooper also had a five-hit performance and drove in a run in game one.
Game One – Davenport 4, Lourdes 0
Although Davenport scored four runs, one of them was earned. The Panthers first two runs in the contest came in the third inning. Cooper hit a one-out single and
Derek Dennis laid down a bunt to move him over. Woo followed with a walk and both runners were moved into scoring position with stolen bases. The Panthers caught a break when the second baseman bobbled the baseball on soft ground ball hit by Allen, allowing Cooper and Woo to score.
The only earned run charged in the game was in the fifth inning.
Tyler Berger led off with a triple into right center and Cooper brought him home with a single through the left side.
Liebman retired the first 10 batters before surrendering a one-out walk in the fourth. He almost lost the no-hitter in the sixth on a low popup on the left side but Dennis made a diving backhanded catch to preserve the bid. Liebman would eventually lose the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh but he ended up going all the way with 11 strikeouts and walking two batters.
Game Two – Davenport 2, Lourdes 0
The Panthers were retired in order in the opening inning but was able to get the eventual winning run across in the second. Allen hit a double to left field to lead off the inning, and with
Andrew Kawam running for him,
Jordan Schumann moved him over with a sacrifice bunt and a ground out by
Carlos Berroa was enough for the winning run to come home.
Sain, who tossed a complete-game gem at Cornerstone Wednesday, continued to pitch solid on the mound. The Gray Wolves (14-26-1, 5-17-1 WHAC) escaped from being no-hit again by the same pitcher last year with a one-out single in the sixth. The right-hander would punch out his seventh batter right after before handing the ball to
Ryan Butzer.
Davenport would collect an insurance run in an identical fashion. Allen once again led off with a double, Kawam was moved to third on Schumann's sacrifice bunt and Edward Grochowalski Jr. brought him home with single to center field.
The Panthers will head back to the campus of Cornerstone Monday to play a seven-inning game at 2 p.m. Game two of the doubleheader between the Panthers and Golden Eagles was postponed due to thunderstorms.
Post-game Notes
Davenport improves to 8-0 all-time against Lourdes…
Andrew Kawam, who has stolen 21 bags this season, is five away from tying the single-season record held by Travis Laver in 2011.
