Madonna Slugs Its Way to a Doubleheader Victory Over Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Michael Allen had four hits, including a double, and Edward Grochowalski Jr. and Jotham Woo both drove in three RBI but the Davenport baseball team couldn't recover from a large deficits in its doubleheader loss at Madonna Monday afternoon. The Crusaders rallied from three runs down to win game one 9-5 while they went to work right away to win game two 12-6. The Panthers will have Tuesday off but will travel down the Beltline to play at Cornerstone for the first time on a baseball diamond Wednesday at 2 p.m.
 
It proved to be a slugfest at Ilitch Park Monday as both teams combined for 13 extra base hits in both games, including three homers. The Crusaders (23-7, 10-1 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) edged the Panthers (23-12, 8-6 WHAC) 25-22 as well as doubles 7-1.
 
Grochowalski also added a solo shot for the second consecutive day. Corey Anderson had a busy day on the mound as he appeared in both contests, combining for three innings and allowing a run and a hit while striking out two.
 
Game One
The top of the Panthers batting order got the game going with adding a pair runs. The Panthers got runners on second and third when Cam Cooper led off with a walk and Derek Dennis singled to right center and advanced into scoring position on the throw, setting up for Jotham Woo to bring both runners home when he sent a pitch down the left field line.
 
The Crusaders cut the lead in half in their opening inning using two singles and a wild pitch. The heart of the Panthers batting order helped add more breathing room to their lead in the third inning. Woo led off with a single and Michael Allen hit into an open gap in right center for an RBI double. Courtesy runner Andrew Kawam would score the Panthers fourth run on Edward Grochowalski Jr.'s single to first base.
 
Michael Clutterbuck (4-4) was off to a solid start until he ran into trouble in the fifth, when he surrendered five runs as Madonna took a 5-4 lead. Ryan Butzer took over and stopped the bleeding only the victim of another big run inning in the sixth, conceding three runs.
 
Before the Crusaders added three runs in the sixth, Davenport was able to get one run in its half. Cooper reached on a two-out single, advanced to second after Dennis was hit and scored on Woo's single up the middle.
 
Game Two
Despite committing two errors in the first inning, Madonna kept Davenport scoreless in the frame and did serious damage its half. Danny Sullivan (4-3) would retire the first two batters but a single and a walk set up a three-run shot, and another walk followed by a two-run blast gave the Crusaders a 5-0 lead.
 
Davenport was able to get two runs across in the second inning. The Panthers would load the bases on singles by Jordan Schumann and Carlos Berroa and a walk by Eric Cummings. The Crusaders traded a run for an out when Berroa was out at second on a fielder's choice by Cooper. Dennis followed with an RBI single to left.
 
Sullivan went 2.2 innings allowing nine runs on eight hits and four walks. He also punched out three batters before handing the ball to Anderson. Colton Satterlee went the rest of the way, having struck out two batters but conceded two runs on five hits and a walk.
 
Post-Game Notes
Davenport falls to 14-4 in the all-time series against Madonna…After reaching base safely in both games, Michael Allen extends that streak to 28, breaking the school record of 27 set by James Folske in the inaugural season in 2009…Derek Dennis is also on a reached base streak as he has recorded 18 consecutive games…Allen has also extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
