GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport returned to the court for the first time since dropping a tough 5-4 decision to rival Northwestern Ohio and came away with one of their most impressive wins of the season as they defeated Indiana Wesleyan 7-2 at MVP Sportsplex. The win lifts the Panthers to 11-5 on the season as they will host Ashford University (Iowa) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Davenport faced off against an opponent who came into the week with the same ranking as them and the Panthers left the night with an impressive 7-2 win over Indiana Wesleyan.
DU got the night started with a 2-1 advantage after doubles play with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The tandem of
Pierre Michelsen and
Vitaly Shumilov won 8-4 at the top and then the brother team of
Tyler Chambers and
Zac Chambers won 8-3 at the bottom. IWU did get one point winning a close 8-6 match in the middle.
Turning to the singles matches, DU continued to push as they posted five wins out of the six matches with their only setback coming at the top with Michelsen falling in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Posting wins were
Vitaly Shumilov (7-6, 6-3),
Zac Chambers in three sets at No. 3,
Tyler Chambers (6-0, 6-4), at No. 4,
Christian Woods (6-0, 7-5) at No. 5 and
Matheus Moreira de Carvalho (7-6, 7-5) at No. 6.
The win improves DU to 11-5 on the year as they will host Ashford on Saturday.

“The men played pretty well. IWU was strong at the top but didn't have the depth to compete in the lower spots. I was happy overall that we were able to win the close matches at the top but moving forward we need to have better focus in the matches where we started out ahead. Momentum can swing so quickly that it's important for us to always be going after the next point and not get complacent. “
