PULASKI, Tenn. –
Sam Cole threw her second career perfect game as she led the Lady Panther softball team to a split at Martin Methodist on Sunday afternoon. Cole's perfect game is also the second in school history as she and her teammates blanked the Red Hawks 8-0 in five innings in the opener before falling by the same score in six innings in the nightcap. The split leaves Davenport with an overall record of 13-6-1 as they come back to Michigan for their home opener on Wednesday, March 20 when they welcome in Bethel College (Ind.) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. There will be a dedication ceremony of the new Farmers Athletic Complex starting at 1:15 p.m. on the tennis courts.
The Davenport softball team got a brilliant performance from their lone senior as
Sam Cole hurled the school's second ever perfect game to lift the Lady Panthers to a split against Martin Methodist on Sunday. The Red Hawks, like the Panthers, came into the weekend receiving votes in the latest NAIA Softball Top-25 Poll.
Game 1 – W, 8-0 (5)
Junior Amber Getty provided more than enough offense for Cole as the outfielder went 2-3 with one run scored and a season best five RBI to help get the day started for Davenport. DU scored four times in the second, three in the third and Getty helped them get to the eight-run plateau needed for a mercy with her second double of the game that scored pinch runner Katie Creighton in the fifth.
Sam Cole needed just one of those runs as she was dominate on the mound and now has one no-hitter and one perfect game so far in 2013. Her last perfect game came during her freshman campaign when she did it against St. Catherine (Ky.). Cole struck out only one batter and got the remaining 14 by equal sevens to pick up her ninth win of the season.
Also having big games for the Panthers, who posted 12 hits, were KC Dunne (2-3 and a pair of RBI) as well as Debra Burton, Carli SanMillan and Melissa Covert who each posted two hits and scored a combined five runs.
Game 2 – L, 8-0 (6)
For as good as the opener was, the Panthers fell victim to a powerful offense from the host Red Hawks in the nightcap. Davenport could not get the bats going like they did in the 8-0 win earlier in the day as Martin Methodist shut them down allowing eight hits with a pair of them coming from
Amber Getty as only one DU runner advanced past second base.
Offensively, the Red Hawks took out their frustrations on freshman
Kyleigh Linebaugh as she was tagged for six runs (four of them earned) on seven hits.
Davenport will open up their brand new facility on Wednesday when they host Bethel (Ind.) at 4pm in a doubleheader. There will be a formal dedication of the entire Farmers Athletic Complex facility at 1:15 p.m. on the tennis courts and a special ceremony on the softball field prior to the first pitch against the Pilots. If you cannot make it out, you can watch it live on the Davenport Athletics Network (DAN).
Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Ronda Varnesdeel
“Sam has always been a leader and a horse on the mound for us. She was in control for all five innings and our defense did a great job behind her”
