CANTON, Ohio – On the eve of their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener at Northwestern Ohio, Davenport picked up a pair of convincing wins over GLIAC and NCAA DII foe Walsh University. The women's team swept the Cavaliers while the men's team won 8-1. DU will stay in the state of Ohio for their matches with the Racers scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start Saturday afternoon.
Men's – W, 8-1
Davenport stormed out to a 3-0 lead in doubles play while dropping only nine games with the tandem of
Christian Woods and Mathues Moreira de Carvalho won 8-2. DU won 8-4 and 8-3 in the other two matches.
Then DU went into the singles play and dominated as well finishing off five wins all in straight sets while dropping just one. At the top,
Pierre Michelsen won 6-3, 6-1 followed by Vitaly Schumilov (6-1, 6-2),
Christian Woods (6-4, 6-2),
Tyler Chambers (6-2, 6-1) and Carvalho (6-1, 6-3).
Women's – W, 9-0
Davenport got back on the winning track after falling in their last three matches and they did it in a big way by not dropping a single match. DU won at No. 1 (
Alyssa Fuentes and
Emily Spiech) and No. 2 doubles (
Kristi Kuzdal and
Marcie Kooyers) won by identical 8-5 scores while
Angelica Woods and
Katie VanDerLaan teamed up to win 8-4.
Kooyers and Woods then took three sets to close out their singles matches but the rest of the team won in straight sets. Kooyers won 10-4 in the third set while Woods won a thriller 13-11.
Both teams will take the court on Saturday at Northwestern Ohio in the league opener for both schools. The UNOH men are ranked No. 21 in the country and defeated the Panthers three times last season while the Racer women have been the biggest threat to the Lady Panthers as they finished runner-up to DU in last year's WHAC Tournament but brought the run to the national tournament to an end with a 5-4 win at regionals.
