GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Although she didn't get the starting nod, Tiesha Stokes still produced. The freshman scored 18 points, brought down nine rebounds and forced eight steals as she guided the 10th-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to an 87-57 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference win over UM-Dearborn Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Panthers (24-2, 17-2 WHAC) continue to remain a game behind first-place Concordia in the league standings. The Cardinals picked up a road win at Northwestern Ohio.

As a team, the Panthers shot .439 from the floor while keeping the Wolves (9-16, 8-11 WHAC) to a 39 percentile. Stokes wasn't the only Panther to reach double figures in points on the evening. Along with her four assists, Karli Harris turned in 17 points, Kendra Cook produced 16 and Alex Law collected 11, with nine of them coming from beyond the arc.

The Davenport starters got off to a slow start but the bench picked them up. Kia Frazier tossed in the first basket before a Stokes layup followed by a 3-pointer by Law put the Panthers ahead 7-2 with 15:38. The Wolves kept chasing the Panthers, but a Davenport found a huge momentum, using a 20-2 run to take a 34-12 with 3:38 left. Both teams would trade off a pair of baskets within the final minute, but DU headed into the locker room with a 38-20 lead.

Cook tallied eight points in the opening half to lead the Panthers. Harris and Stokes both finished right behind her with seven points while Harris manufactured three assists, Stokes with four rebounds.

UM-Dearborn started a rhythm at the start of the second period, going 7-2 in 3:08, but Stokes go the Panthers to reverse the momentum and use a 14-2 run in nearly two minutes to take a 54-29 lead, putting the game out of the Wolves reach.

The Panthers will remain in Grand Rapids this weekend, as they will travel down the Beltline to play at Aquinas Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers are 3-0 in the three-team rivalry this season, going 2-0 against Cornerstone and rolling past the Saints 108-49 in their last meeting at the Student Center back in January.

Post-Game Quotes – Head coach Mike Williams

On switching Leah Sevcik and Tiesha Stokes as starters – “We just went back. We liked that first group to start the game and kind of bring a different look off the bench. Ty's been getting into foul trouble lately so it buys her a few minutes when she comes in. I thought she played very well and stayed out of foul trouble today because of it.”

On the slow start – “I thought we were a little tight, not sure why, but we made some uncharacteristic passes in the first half and we missed some shots. It usually falls for us. Once we got some turnovers it kind of got us rolling offensively.”

On UMD's Jalissa Williams' 25-point performance – “She's a really good player. We didn't really match up with her well today. Her and Chelsea Davis are a handful. It was tough to match up with both of them. We tried to take away Chelsea and we got Jalissa who goes off. They are great, maybe the best, one-two combo in the conference, but they are really good. They can really put the ball in the basket.”

Post-Game Notes
Davenport has now won all 23 meetings against UM-Dearborn…Leah Sevcik made her first start since Nov. 23 at San Diego Christian.
