BATESVILLE, Ark. – Davenport got the 2013 season started with a 1-0-1 opening day at the Lyon College (Ark.) Tournament on Friday and they will resume play Saturday against Ashford (Iowa) at 9:00am. The Lady Panthers produced two big innings to defeat the host Scots in the opener 11-2 before rallying to tie the game in the sixth against Blue Mountain (Miss.) only to see it called due to darkness after seven completed innings.
Davenport softball opened up the 2013 campaign on Friday as they made their first ever appearance in the state of Arkansas and came away with a 1-0-1 day against Lyon and Blue Mountain State. DU will return to the field at 9:00 (EST) on Saturday when they face Ashford in the final game of pool play and then the Panthers will have one more game to follow that.
Game 1 – Davenport 11, Lyon 2 (5)
The host Scots got the tournament off with a bang as they posted a first inning two-run homerun from Valerie Howell off DU starter
Sam Cole. Unfortunately for the Scots, they would have only one more hit over the course of the next five innings as Cole shut them down on the mound ending the contest with eight strikeouts.
The Davenport bats came alive in the second as they put up eight runs highlighted by RBI from
Carli SanMillan,
Katie Creighton and
KC Dunne and a 2-RBI double from
Ashleigh Blovsky. Seven different players scored during the inning and it gave Cole more than enough run support to get the opening game win. DU tacked on three more in the fifth innings as
Debra Burton,
Maegan Jenkins and
Amber Getty all scored for the Panthers.
Game 2 – Davenport 2, Blue Mountain 2 (final in 7 – called due to darkness)
Looking to post a sweep on the first day of the season, Davenport again started slow as Blue Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an un-earned run thanks to a DU fielding error. The Toppers got a second unearned run in the third as they took a 2-1 lead after the Panthers had tied it up on their first homerun of the year off the bat of
Ashleigh Blovsky in the bottom of the second.
The score would remain the same until the Panthers came to bat in the sixth and
Katie Creighton scored on a ball put in play by
Debra Burton. Unfortunately DU was not able to get the go-ahead run after a running error ended the rally. The final inning went 1-2-3 for each team and the umpires/coaches decided to call the game due to darkness with it tied at two which marks the second straight year DU has posted a tie.
Post-Game Quotes – Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel

“Sam was a work-horse on the mound today and for being the first appearance, had exceptional command and her stamina was more than expected for day one”
