Tennis Teams Gear up for GR City Tournament and Ferris State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The last weekend of play before heading to Florida for spring break brings two great challenges for the men's and women's tennis teams. The men, who dropped two tough matches to NCAA DII foes last weekend, will get a chance in an individual way at the GR City Tournament hosted by Aquinas College while the women will take on Ferris State on Saturday. The next time each team will be in action will be in sunny Florida for their annual spring break trip.

Head coach Patrick Grashorn and his tennis teams will face some great challenges this weekend on both the men's and women's side. Patrick took some time to answer some questions about the upcoming GR City Tourney and the women's dual match with Ferris State.

Women's

You guys have been off for a week now since opening win over St. Francis - explain what you have worked on specifically in practice?
After St. Francis we looked at changing up some of the doubles pairings. We also worked on doubles specific decision making and movement. It was a good week of practice.

Playing against an NCAA DII foe does what to help the team prepare?
Playing FSU is just like any other match in our eyes. That being said, it is a good opportunity to work on things in a match situation but without ranking implications.

Men's

GR City Tournament - explain what it means to the fans out there - how important the tournament is?
The GR City Tournament is an event for all of the schools in and around Grand Rapids, regardless of division, to play against each other in a team tournament format. There will be 6 singles flights and 4 doubles flights and although team scoring has become unofficial, there is still the pride of being the top school in Grand Rapids on the line.

What are your expectations after a difficult weekend against GV and Ferris?
After a tough weekend last week, I'm looking for our guys to bounce back and play solid in the tournament. We will be shorthanded with Vitaly out with bronchitis and Pierre resting an injured arm. Everyone will be moved up two positions so I'm looking forward to seeing how our guys respond to the challenge.
