ADRIAN, Mich. – A total of 51 fouls were called and 71 free-throws were attempted as No. 10 Davenport ended a two-game losing skid with a 65-50 win over Siena Heights in Adrian. Dominez Burnett went for a game high 25 points while the Panther defense limited the Saints to a measly 29.8% from the field as they improve to 7-2 on the year and 3-2 in the WHAC. DU will host Lawrence Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Dominez Burnett posted another 20-plus point night as the sophomore finished with 25 points to go along with six rebounds while JaVontae Ford joined him in double-figures with 16 points as they led DU to a 65-50 win in Adrian. Braima Hai came off the bench to finish with five points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals while DU shot a season low 30.4% from the field but limited the host Saints to 29.5%.
After a slow start by both teams, Davenport took a 7-7 tie and made it a 16-9 lead with three-pointers on three consecutive possessions from Braima Hai, Mike Betcher and JaVontae Ford. The lead grew to 10 at 22-12 when Jon Prins laid a ball in off an alley-oop but the Saints fought back to get within two at 22-20.
DU then closed out the half on a 15-6 run as Dominez Burnett scored eight of his 11 first half points and John McCloud had a 3-point play to help the Panthers go into the locker room up 37-26.
The first five minutes of the second half seemed to take forever as numerous fouls were called setting up a free-throw shooting contest as both teams went into the bonus with almost 14 minutes to play. After Siena Heights had cut the lead to just five at 39-34, the Panthers used a 24-11 run to up their lead to 17 points (63-45).
During that span, Dominez Burnett scored 12 of his game high 25 points while the DU defense limited the Saints to only one field goal while they got the rest of their points from the foul line. DU then ran out the remaining time with the final score of 65-50 in favor of Davenport.
Post-Game Notes
The win helps DU avoid a third straight loss which would have been just the second time under coach Paddock since he arrived at Davenport in 2008-09…The 8 rebounds by Kevin Rich were a career high as were the 6 rebounds by John McCloud…The 20+ points by Dominez Burnett marks the sixth straight game he has done that and 7th in the 9 games overall…DU has now won 11 straight meetings against Siena Heights
