Next DU event: Wednesday, December 4, 2013 – at Siena Heights (Adrian, Mich.) – 6 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Tiesha Stokes went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 on the free throw line for 19 points to lead the second-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to a 95-59 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday night. Ali Bouman added 17 points,
Alex Law had 13 and
Kia Frazier tallied 10 to round out the Panthers who reached double digits.
While the Panthers (8-1) forced 30 turnovers on the Saints (3-7), they couldn't quite stop last year's second-team NAIA All-American Katie Doenning, who registered 23 points and seven rebounds on the evening.
In addition to leading the team in points, Stokes also paced the Panthers in steals with eight and
Molly Babbs tied the sophomore in rebounds with six within the final minutes of the contest.
Davenport quickly jumped onto the scoreboard when Bouman won the opening tip and knocked it to the hands of Stokes, who immediately put the ball into the basket. Although the Fighting Saints played a game of cat-and-mouse with the Panthers, DU used a 14-2 run led by Law to take a 22-8 lead at the 11:30 mark.
The Panthers never trailed from the start and had built their largest lead in the half at 24 when Bouman's layup at 2:10.
As DU went into halftime with a 47-28 lead, Stokes led the way with 17 points, four rebounds and assists each. Bouman and Law both had 10. In addition to shooting 55 percent from the field, the Panthers went 11-for-15 on the charity stripe.
The starting five of
Kia Frazier, Stokes,
Linnea Brandholm, Bouman and
Brittany Johnson wasted no time returning to work after intermission, building a 12-0 run to take a 59-28 lead at 16:43. Brandholm also made the first Davenport 3-pointer from the left corner after going 0-6 in the first half.
Bouman led the Panthers in the latter half with seven points, followed by Babbs and Frazier with six.
Davenport returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play Wednesday as it travels to Adrian, Mich., to face No. 16 Siena Heights. Opening tip is at 6 p.m.
