ADRIAN, Mich. – Davenport broke an early second period tie, scoring five goals throughout the period and posting no penalties. Seven different Panthers found goal fame tonight including three power-play goals from Swink, Otto, and Branden Burton to beat Adrian College- Black 8-3 in Adrian. Burton put three assists and two goals up on the board for DU and led his team in points tonight. Next weekend the Panthers look to conquer GVSU in a weekend series starting at Patterson Friday at 8:20, and continuing Saturday in Allendale.
The Panthers saw some good looks from Jake Otto and Donald Sund early in the first period when they were trying to take an early lead. Daniel Swink put DU in the lead 1-0 with an clean power-play wrist shot to the top right of the net after a passing series from Blake Damerow and Branden Burton which left the net wide open. Burton brought some more heat for DU with a sweet goal in front three minutes after Davenport's first goal. The Panthers kept pressure on the Bulldogs goalie Matt Neal until the very last second of the period.
Adrian began to develop some control in the beginning of the second by scoring two goals to tie it up with 12:36 remaining. The Panthers didn't let that bring them down even a little bit, Otto responded with a power-play goal for DU first with a nice shot in front, set up once again by Burton who has made it his mission to make plays tonight. In fact, three minutes later he sent a rocket of a pass to Willis Gelow in perfect time for Gelow to get it right past the Bulldogs goalie. Patrick Martin added another for the Panthers and put them up 5-2 with just under nine minutes left in period two. Sund scored a sweet unassisted goal after a mid-ice turn over. Adrian had a quick response with a goal six seconds later to make the score 6-3. Swink rifled a pass to a very ready Bryon Guerin who blasted it past Neal with a minute left in the second.
No goals were scored in the first half of period three as both teams battled through power-plays but falling short to impressive play by Andrew Habasevich and Matt Neal. Otto, Sund, and the rest of the Panther offense poured shots on Neal all period but the boys couldn't find the back of the net. Gelow controlled the defensive aspect of period three for Davenport, keeping Adrian scoreless and keeping the game in the Panthers paws. Burton was able to sneak one more goal into the net with two minutes remaining after two perfect passes from Sund and Hambidge right after AC gave them the power-play and finishing the game with an 8-3 win for Davenport.
Walking away with a win and a loss this weekend, DU looks to Grand Valley State next weekend for a two game weekend series
