GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Gabby Florez and
Danielle Ordway continue to lead the way for the Davenport women's rugby team as the two wingers combined for 22 points to help the Panthers down Eastern Illinois University 38-0 Saturday afternoon at DU Turf Field. The Panthers improve to 4-0 as a program, with three of those victories shutouts.
Brittany O'Dell and
Julia Mayer both chipped in and added 10 points on the scoreboard with a try.
Hannah Tennant shared kicking duties with Ordway, going 3-for-4 on the day.
With four games in the books, the Panthers have outscored their opponents 237-5.
It began to shower when both teams began their warm-up but Mother Nature was kind enough to trade a wet day into a muggy afternoon.
The game was mostly play in midfield until the 33:30 mark when Ordway picked up a loose ball midway into the Panthers territory and ran it all the across the field for the first try of the game.
Mercedes Clifford carried the ball just near the try line but was tackled, but not before she found Florez on the left side to complete the try and give DU a 12-0 lead.
Florez managed to get five more points before halftime. With 3:30 left, Clifford once again found Florez behind her on the left side before she was tackled. Florez hustled her way from midfield extend DU's lead to 17-0 heading into intermission.
O'Dell added onto the Panthers lead with a try at 26:45 followed by Mayer about eight minutes later. Ordway would complete the 38-0 with both a try and conversion.
The Panthers will welcome Grand Valley State to DU Turf Field for a midmorning matchup Saturday. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
