GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey finally returned home after playing their last five games on the road. Head coach
Phil Sweeney, was looking to get his team back on the winning track after being swept by Liberty last weekend. However, the Panthers were unable to do so, as No. 13 Adrian came away with a 4-0 victory. Davenport will be back on the ice next weekend as they have a home-and-home series against Michigan-Dearborn. The Panthers will travel to Dearborn, Mich. on Friday for 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
The game opened with both teams trying to find an early goal to take and early advantage. Both teams battled looking to set the tone of the game, and the Bulldogs were doing that, as they were able to hold pressure in the Davenport zone. With 11:31 left on the clock Adrian put the first goal of the game on board, with puck movement through the neutral zone to lead to a break.
After the Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead
Phil Graveline came up with some huge saves to keep the score 1-0. The Panthers had a few close chances in the last five minutes of the period but they could not cash in. Adrian took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Early on in the second period both teams power play opportunities, but neither team could. Davenport opened up the game, as they held the puck in the Adrian end for some long streaks. The Panthers came close on two power play chances they had, but just missed the net.
With less than five minutes in the second period Adrian added another goal on the power play to take a 2-0. Right after the power play Winston Hoefer jumped in front of the net to and tried to tip the puck past the Adrian net minder, but was unable to. After two periods Adrian led 2-0.
The final period with some four-on-four action and an abbreviated power play for the Panthers. However, DU was not able to score as
Phil Wendecker had a couple chances. With 13:48 left in the game Ryan Bachman was able to beat Graveline high glove side on an odd man rush to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
At the half way point Adrian added another goal to go up 4-0. After Adrian scored their fourth goal of the game Davenport pick up the intensity and physicality trying to comeback in the game. DU was unable to comeback as Adrian held on to win 4-0.
The Panthers will head to the east side of the state to take on Michigan-Dearborn Friday, November 1st for game one of home-and-home weekend series with the Wolverines. Game one puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. Game two of the series will be at Patterson Ice Center on Saturday, November 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport drops to 4-3-0-1 on the season. This is the first time the Panthers have been shutout since October 10, 2011 in a game against Minot State were they forfeited the contest.
Phil Graveline posted 33 saves in the game.
