GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a battle of two of the last three undefeated teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), Marcey DeHaan led a group of four Panthers to post double-digit kills as they defeated visiting Northwestern Ohio 3-1. DU was able to end the Racers' nine match winning streak and in the process pick up their fourth straight win to improve to 16-6 overall and 5-0 in league play. Davenport will resume play next Wednesday as they travel to Livonia to face No. 4 ranked Madonna University.
Four players posted double-digit kills as sophomore Marcey DeHaan was tops with 17 followed by 13 from Hannah Stone, 12 from Olivia DenHartigh and 10 from Molly Lameyer. Amber Getty finished with 50 assists while Sidney Rodriguez was tops with 23 digs.
Davenport fell behind 8-2 in the first set only to quickly erase that with an 8-2 run to even the set at 10 a piece on a kill from Hannah Stone. DU then scored 15 of the next 22 points to claim the opening set 25-17. Set two was much different than the first with neither team holding a lead of more than three points and it was the Racers who led late 23-22 but DU rallied with the last three points finished off from a kill from DeHaan for the 25-23 win.
UNOH, who had lost just once coming into the match, came out strong in the third set and won going away 25-18 to force a fourth. Head coach Megan Lenhart rallied the troops and DU stormed out to a 6-2 lead and only a late UNOH run made it interested as the Panthers closed out the match with the 25-23 win.
Davenport will now face one of their biggest challenges of the season when they travel to No. 4 and undefeated Madonna University next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Crusaders. The two teams are the last in the conference without a loss.
