Score: #7 Davenport 4, Madonna 3 (2OT)
Records: DU (13-1-0, 6-0-0 WHAC), MU (7-7-1, 3-3-0 WHAC)
Next DU event: Wednesday, Oct. 23 – at Cornerstone (CU Soccer Stadium, Grand Rapids, Mich.) – 7 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7 Davenport women's soccer team trailed Madonna all through the match, but turned to veterans for a late comeback as Thelma Gylfadottir's first goal of the season in the 86th minute tied it up 3-3, and for the second time in three matches, it was fellow senior Lizzie Paul with the golden goal in the 104th minute to lift the Panthers to a 4-3 double-overtime Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory over the Crusaders.
With the win, the Panthers (13-1-0, 6-0-0 WHAC) set a new school record for consecutive wins at 12, breaking last year's record of 11.
Paul continues to stay on fire this season as the Manchester, England native added two more goals prior to record her second consecutive hat trick and her fifth in her career.
On a day where both teams had to deal with on-and-off drips of rain, the Crusaders (7-7-1, 3-3-0 WHAC) took advantage of the Panthers struggles to maintain possession in the first half. Katlyn Krysiak scored her first of two goals on the day 1:31 into the match by dribbling down the left flank and beating DU keeper Michelle Marcus. Liliana Serratos was able to break through the DU defense and add on to the Crusaders lead in the 16th minute.
Davenport managed to cut Madonna's lead in half before heading into the locker room when Paul's shot from a distance beat MU keeper Blaire Schmalenberg in the 40th minute.
The Crusaders regained the two-goal lead with Krysiak's second goal of the day only to see it disappear 15 seconds later. After the Panthers restarted the game with a kickoff, Paul dribbled into the Crusaders territory before her shot 25 yards out had an awkward bounce, passing Schmalenberg and into the goal.
DU continued to stay aggressive on the attack and had many close chances to even the score until the 86th minute. While Gylfadottir was trying to maintain possession of the ball against two Madonna defenders, Schmalenberg took a risk by getting into the mix and the Iceland native punished her by letting a gentle tapper roll into the net to tie the match at three.
The Panthers were in control all throughout the extra minutes, outshooting Madonna 5-1. After a throw-in by Emily Nielsen, Gylfadottir connected to Paul, who dribbled deep into the Crusaders goal box and beat three defenders and Schmalenberg to compete the comeback.
Davenport hits the road Wednesday for a matchup against Beltline rival Cornerstone Wednesday under the lights at 7 p.m.
