GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Trailing 44-46 with just under 10 minutes to play, No. 10 Davenport used a 20-10 run to close out the game as they picked up a big 64-56 road win at archrival Cornerstone. The victory is the fifth straight for the Panthers who won their first game this season when trailing at the half. DU improves to 19-4 on the season and is now in first place alone in the WHAC at 12-3. The Panthers will head to Adrian on Monday to face Siena Heights at 7:30pm.
Dominez Burnett was the only Panther to finish in double-figures as he scored all 11 of his points in the second half after battling foul trouble in the first.
Thomas Drew nailed three 3-pointers to finish with nine and
DeArmond Davis matched him on 3-4 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the foul line.
Cold shooting was the theme in the opening half as both teams struggled to score with the shooting percentages sitting in the mid-30's. Davenport twice built leads of four and five but each time, the host Eagles came back to keep it close all while having their leading scorer, Wes Hudson, in foul trouble. After a
Thomas Drew 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining gave the Panthers a 27-23 lead, Cornerstone then closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 28-27.
The second half became more of a free-throw shooting contest than who could come out of their shooting slump as the teams combined for 34-41 from the charity stripe. After CU nailed a pair at the line on the opening possession to give them their largest lead at 30-27, the two teams began a 10 minute stretch where neither team led by more than two points and there were eight lead changes and four ties.
Trailing 44-46 with 9:20 to play, DU used a 7-0 run highlighted by four straight points from red-shirt freshman
Dawid Czerniawski and three from
Dominez Burnett and
DeArmond Davis to post their largest lead to that point of five 51-46. The closest CU would get the remainder of the game was two on four more occasions but Burnett hit a huge three-pointer with just under 3:00 to play to put the Panthers up five 58-53. DU then iced the game at the line going 6-6 down the stretch to preserve the much needed road victory.
Neither team finished strong the field as DU was just 33% (19-57) while Cornerstone was a dismal 26% (16-61) including just five made field goals in the second half.
Davenport, thanks to a loss by Madonna University, moves into first place along atop the standings of the conference at 12-3. The Panthers will head to Adrian on Monday for a 7:30pm matchup with Siena Heights.
