SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Six Davenport women's basketball players reached double digits in points as the Panthers opened the second half of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a 113-41 win over Marygrove on the campus of Lawrence Tech Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (19-1, 11-1 WHAC) came into the Don Ridler Field House with hot hands as they shot 60 percent from the floor, 48 from behind the arc. The last time the Panthers shot 60 percent from the field was in 2009 against Spring Hill College.
All Panthers put a point on the board.
Alex Law led the pack with 14 points,
Emily Nielsen had 13,
Linnea Brandholm and
Kayla Gross both added 11 while
Alison Bouman and
Kendra Cook contributed 10 points to round out the Panthers in double digits.
Despite recording 10 points,
Karli Harris led the way in the assists column with 10 and Cook paced the Panthers in rebounds with 10.
Davenport got on the board 15 seconds into the game with Harris' 3-pointer and Stokes added a layup to build a 5-0 lead 30 seconds later. Both teams would take turns in scoring baskets until Davenport found a rhythm.
Kendra Cook used two layups and
Emily Nielsen added two to put the Panthers ahead 12-5 with 17 minutes left.
The Panthers really found a momentum midway through the half. Nielsen, Stokes,
Alex Law and Bouman teamed up to use a 17-0 run, while Brandholm,
Kayleigh VanKeulen,
Leah Sevcik and Harris built an 11-0 run to take a 56-18 lead.
Davenport went into intermission with a 63-24 lead. Brandholm led the way with 11 points. The Panthers were also having no trouble shooting from beyond the arc, shooting 56 percent. Brandholm (11 points) and Law (9 points) both paced the Panthers with three 3-pointers each, while Harris and Nielsen both contributed a pair.
The Panthers got the second half started with a huge momentum. The starting five, Harris, Nielsen, Gross, Stokes and Cook, opened the second half with a 15-0 run. The Mustangs didn't get on the board in the second half until the 16 minute mark.
Gross paced the Panthers in the latter half with 10 points while Cook brought down five rebounds.
The Panthers will conclude their two-game road swing Saturday at Lourdes. Opening tip is at 5:30 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport is now 2-0 all-time against Marygrove…After tallying 10 assists at Marygrove,
Karli Harris has recorded 355 total in three years as a Panther and has passed Shannon Callaghan's (2003-07) 353 for third in the career lists.
