GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the league opener for both schools, it was the visiting Warriors' first half goal that became the game winner as Indiana Tech posted a 1-0 shutout in Grand Rapids on Saturday night. The loss breaks a three match winning streak for the Panthers as they fall to 4-4-0 overall on the season and 0-1-0 in WHAC play. Davenport will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 26 when they welcome league newcomer Lawrence Tech for a 7pm kickoff.
Davenport posted a few great chances late in the second half with two balls hitting the cross-bar but neither got over the goal line as Indiana Tech hung on for the 1-0 victory in the league opener for both schools. Junior
Stuart Collins led the Panthers with a pair of shots on goal as Davenport outshot the Warriors 13-2 overall.
In a first half that saw neither team push for much offensive threat, a long ball sent in by the Warriors midfield bounced back and forth in the box before Tech's Zach St. Aubin put it away for the match's first goal. That score at the 18:23 mark held up as the lone tally in the opening half as each team went to the locker room.
Davenport started the second half much like they did in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Illinois Tech and they had a few good scoring chances but were unable to get anything past Tech keeper Reece Richardson. Late in regulation, DU had their best chance when a shot by
Stuart Collins was just tipped and sent over the net. Shortly after, with only seven minutes to play,
Donal Lynch sent a ball into the box that went off the bottom of the bar and off the IIT keeper but stayed just out of the goal to keep the score 1-0 and that would be how it would end.
The loss ends a three match winning streak for the Panthers as they now turn their focus to Wednesday's match against Lawrence Tech at 7pm at the Turf Field.
Post-Match Quotes – Head coach
Chris Hughes
“I do not think we came out like we probably should have in that first half and Indiana Tech did some really good things. We got some better shots and better looks throughout the game and their keeper made some great saves to keep us off of the scoreboard, so kudos to them.”
