ADRIAN, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team entered day two of the 2012 WHAC Baseball Tournament needing a win over top seed and WHAC regular season champions Indiana Tech to continue towards a tournament championship. However, the Panthers bid for a WHAC Tournament Championship fell short to the tune of a 13-7 loss to the Warriors.
The Panthers and Warriors played in what was one of the most entertaining games of the 2012 WHAC Tournament. Davenport was able to get out in front of the Warriors with two first inning runs, one when
Austin Licon drove in
Cam Cooper who had opened the game with a double and the second after the Panthers loaded the bases and
Michael Allen drew a bases loaded walk. Davenport would go on to score five more runs over the course of the game, however Indiana Tech seemed to have an answer to each of DU's scoring innings.
Offensively
Cam Cooper went 3 for 6 from the plate, scored twice and had two RBI.
Brandon Bongard also shined at the plate for the Panthers as he went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI.
Michael Allen helped the Panthers offensively with a 1 for 3 day batting with a run scored and a RBI.
Drew Kennedy attempted to help his own cause as the starting pitcher; he went 2 for 5 with a run scored.
Kennedy earned the start today and pitched well today as he did his best to keep the Panthers in this offensive battle between the top two teams in WHAC regular season play. Kennedy went five and one third giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, issued two walks and striking out three Warriors.
Corey Anderson pitched an inning for the Panthers giving up a run on one hit, issuing two walks and striking out one.
Ryan Butzer and
Jarrett Luyk attempted to close out the final two and two-thirds innings; however they would combine to give up seven runs on eight hits, two walks and a lone strike out.
The loss ends the Panthers run towards a WHAC Tournament championship and it also ends the 2012 DU Baseball season. The season saw a Panthers program in their fourth year of existence win nearly 20 conference games, win a record 35 games on the year, and set numerous team records throughout.
