Panthers Overpower Golden Eagles for 5th Straight Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport picked up their fifth consecutive win as they overpowered Cornerstone 8-1 in their first league contest of the year.  The Panthers now have a day off before a stretch where they will play three WHAC matches in three days.  The win lifts Davenport to 11-8 on the season.

Davenport University continues to improve and play some of their best tennis of the season as they downed cross town foe Cornerstone 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Orchard Hills.  The Panthers, who already have set a team record for wins, will now focus their attention to the No. 13 Aquinas College on Thursday.

The top two doubles teams of Victor Roland and Vitaly Shumilov along with Mattheus Carvalho and Keaton Briggs quickly got the Panthers up 2-0 with 8-2 and 8-1 wins.  Cornerstone did grab the final doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 3.

The singles matches were one sided with DU winning five of the six in straight sets.  Shumilov pickd up his first win at No. 1 since February 27 as he won 6-2, 6-3 over John Andrew.  Roland also posted a quick win at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The closest match came at No. 6 where Chris Grashorn picked up a three set win for the sweep in singles for the Panthers.  Chris dropped the first set 5-7 but rebounded to force the tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second.  Grashorn then won the tiebreaker to finish off the Golden Eagles.

DU will host Aquinas College on Thursday at Canepa Tennis Center in East Grand Rapids.  Yhe match is slated to begin at 4:00pm

Post-Match Notes

Davenport lost 0-9 to the Saints in the fall and will be looking for their first win over their Grand Rapids rival in school history...DU is now 2-0 this season against Cornerstone and they have won 17 of the 18 matches...
