ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Davenport traveled to Concordia University for a crucial doubleheader in their quest for another conference championship. They split with the Cardinals (2-3, 2-0) moving their league record to 9-3, which puts them in a tie for first place with Madonna University. The Panthers will be back in action on Friday when they host UM-Dearborn.
Davenport led 2-0 in game one this afternoon, only to see Concordia score three unanswered runs giving the Cardinals the win. The Panthers left eight runners on base in game one.
Karlee Despres and
Paige Sant'Angelo both had hits in the second inning with Sant'Angelo's double bringing in DU's first run. In the third,
Ashleigh Blovsky and
Liz Veltman were able to connect. Veltman's single brought Blovsky across homeplate giving DU the 2-0 lead.
Concordia responded in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cardinals had the bases loaded when they connected on their third hit of the inning giving them the 3-2 victory.
The first four innings of game two remained scoreless. In the top of the fifth inning,
Amber Getty reached base on an error.
Morgan Greenfield joined her with a double down the right field line. Blovsky then doubled to left center bringing both runners home.
That 2-0 lead would be enough to secure the victory as the game was called in the bottom of the sixth because of darkness and rain.
Sam Cole was credited with the win.
