Panther Bats on Fire in Record Setting Victory Over Alma

KENTWOOD, Mich. – Davenport stepped out of WHAC play today with a single nine-inning affair with the Scots of Alma College of the MIAA.  The Panthers powered their way to a 31-7 victory on a day that saw multiple individual and team records broken. The win also sets a school record for victories in a season at 33 breaking the old mark of 32 set in 2010.

Davenport came out swinging, as the Panthers would plate five runs in the first and four runs in the second inning.  After a scoreless third for the Panthers, they would score 10 in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the seventh, and seven in the eighth en-route to a team single game record 31 runs.

The Panthers used a team single game record seven homeruns to power their offense, two of which came from the bat of Austin Licon.  Licon's two homeruns were both three-run shots, the first of which was to right field in the first inning.  In his second at-bat, Licon drove a second three-run homerun to left in the Panthers four run second inning.  Cam Cooper, Brandon Bongard, Jotham Woo, Mike Allen, and Brian Spykerman also hit homeruns in the game for Davenport.

On the day the Panthers broke five single game or single season team records:
• Single game runs with 31 (previous was 17)
• Single game hits with 28 (previous was 23)
• Single game RBI with 28 (previous was 15)
• Single game homeruns with 7 (previous was 3)
• Wins in a season with 33 (previous was 32)
• At-bats in a single game with 51 (previous was 46)

The Panthers also had one single game individual record broken as well as one tied:
• Runs scored in a single game by Austin Licon and Cam Cooper with 5 (previous was 4)
• Hits in a single game was tied by Cam Cooper with 5 (Cooper set earlier this year)

Austin Licon finished the day going 4 for 4 with five runs scored and six RBI.  Cam Cooper also had a quality day going 5 for 6 with five runs scored and one RBI.  Brian Spykerman went 3 for 6 at the plate, scored twice and drove in six RBI.

Davenport now travels to Ann Arbor for a weekend series with Concordia this weekend.  The Panthers enter the series one game back of WHAC leader Indiana Tech who travels to Lourdes this weekend.  The Panthers will need some help from Lourdes while focusing on taking four from Concordia to earn a WHAC regular season title.
