LIMA, Ohio. – It was a tale of two teams during on day one for the Panther baseball on the team's trip to take on the Racers of Northwestern Ohio which ended in a split after two games. Game one saw
Jordan Anderson lead the Panthers with a gutsy performance in a 7-2 Panther victory. Game two saw the Panthers struggle to hit the ball in big spots in a 5-4 defeat.
Game One
Jordan Anderson had a performance that looked similar to the performance Anderson put forth last Saturday versus Lourdes, this game however saw Anderson work without his best stuff. On a day when his off speed pitches weren't typical, Anderson battled to a win, his fifth on the season, which leads the DU pitching staff. Anderson would go seven innings, give up two runs (both unearned), four hits, two walks, and struck out two.
Offensively the Panthers saw
Austin Licon continue to help provide power to the Davenport lineup as he earned his two RBI on a two run homerun in the fifth inning which game the Panthers an early 3-0 advantage.
Jotham Woo 4 for 4 at the plate including a double and a run scored as part of a three run ninth inning to ultimately put the game in the win column.
Game Two
The Panthers came out in game two looking to for a day one sweep, however they were never able to get anything going scoring four runs on six hits. Mike Allen and
Austin Licon would both drive doubles in game two and
Brandon Bongard would triple, however the Panthers were unable to score any one of the three extra base hitters. Allen was 2 for 3 in game two with an RBI.
Eric Cummings continues to hit the ball better going 1 for 2 with a run scored and earning a walk.
Drew Sain earned to start but was unable to continue the magic of his no-hitter from a week ago at Lourdes. Sain's final line was 3.1IP, 4H, 4R (all earned), 1BB, and 3K's. Sain would get solid back up from
Ryan Butzer who went 2.2IP while giving up one hit, zero runs, zero walks, and one strikeout. Butzer is growing into a solid setup guy for the Panthers to help aid closer
Corey Anderson. Anderson over game one and two would pitch 2.1 innings, while giving up zero hits, one run (unearned), zero walks, and striking out one.
Post-Game Quotes – Kevin Tidey
Thoughts on Jordan Anderson – I liked the way Jordan battled today. I think he would be the first to tell you that he didn't have his A-stuff today. His off-speed stuff wasn't typical yet he battled in spots that we needed him to battle and he earned the win.
Overall thoughts on Game Two – Game two we had a letdown; no doubt about it. We once again didn't compete until we had put ourselves in a hole, this time 4-0. It is going to be interesting to see how our guys respond tomorrow as we go after victories in two important games.
