KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team entered play today with a chance to go to 3-1 in WHAC play in a double header versus the Warriors of Indiana Tech.  However in game one Tech outpaced DU on the strength of 7 runs over the first two innings to send the Panthers down in defeat 12-6.  Davenport was much stronger in game two with 15 hits to take a 5-4 decision.

Game One

The first 2 Indiana Tech at-bats in game 1 were all the offense the Warriors would have needed in game one as they scored 7 runs with the bulk coming on a Ignatius Mackenzie grand slam in the 2nd inning.  The Panthers however would battle to make things interesting as they would score 5 runs of their own in the 5th after falling behind 9-1 after the 4th inning.

Offensively the Panthers were able to put 8 hits up on the board, 4 of which came from the duo of Derrick Gentile and Brandon Bongard.  Gentile went 2 for 4, scored a run and had 1 RBI while Bongard also went 2 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI that came on a 2 run homerun.

The Panthers improved on their previous tendency to leave runners on base by only stranding 5 in game one; however the Panthers committed 4 errors in the first two innings.  It was those two innings that allowed Indiana Tech to score their first 7 runs.  The offensive player of the game 1 was Warrior first baseman Eric Wald who went 3 for 5, all three hits being homeruns, scored 4 runs and drove in 5 RBI.

Game Two

Davenport came out much more focused in game 2 as they didn't allow a Warrior run until the 5th inning.  DU starting pitcher Drew Sain was outstanding with 4.2 innings pitched, giving up 3 hits, 2 runs and striking out 7 to earn his second win on the season.  Corey Anderson also pitched well under pressure to earn the save.  Anderson pitched 2.1 innings, gave up 3 hits, 3 runs and struck out 2.

Offensively the Panthers belted 15 hits with five DU hitters having multiple hit games.  Derrick Gentile continued his solid day at the plate going 3 for 4 including a double and scoring a run.  Brandon Bongard also had a good game two going 2 for 4 and a run scored.  Mike Allen continued his hot past 5 games going 3 for 3 with an RBI while Drew Kennedy went 2 for 3 but was left on base 3 times.  The offensive star for DU in game 2 was Jotham Woo who was involved in 3 of the 5 Panther runs in game 2.  Woo went 2 for 2, scored a run and had 2 RBI.

The Panthers also got a hit in a huge spot from Brian Spykerman in which he drove in 2 runs.  In all, eight of the nine starting batters for DU got at least one base hit in game 2.
