KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Davenport baseball opened WHAC play today with the first two games of a four game weekend series versus the Warriors of Indiana Tech. Tech outpaced DU in game one winning 12-7 while the Panthers battled back in game two to earn a 7-3 decision.
Game One
The first game saw the Panthers surrender runs in four consecutive at-bats to the Warriors of which the last three gave Tech 10 of their 12 total runs. The game was panning out to be a good one after the 4th as DU only trailed Tech by one run at 5-4. However, the Warriors used the homerun to their advantage as the team hit a 3 run homerun in the 3rd inning and a grand slam in the 6th to power their offense.
The Panthers were able to hold the Warriors scoreless in the final three innings thanks to the relief pitching efforts of
Alex Ketchum. Ketchum came in after the no outs grand slam in the 6th to retire the side as was his pattern on the day. He would finish with a solid line of 4 innings pitched giving up 2 hits, zero runs, walked no one, and striking out 4.
Offensively the Panthers did have a good deal of success on the day as they put 16 hits on the board which matched the Warrior output for game one. However the Panthers would leave 10 runners on base to the Warriors 5.
Cam Cooper,
Austin Licon, and
Jotham Woo would all go 2 for 5 at the plate with Woo scoring twice and Cooper earning an RBI. Mike Allen continued to see the ball well going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and scoring a run on a two run homerun in the 4th inning.
Derrick Gentile hit the ball well for the Panthers as well as he went 3 for 4 today with a run scored, a RBI, and a base on balls.
Game Two
The second game saw the home Panthers as the visiting team and they took up hitting just as they had done in the later stages of game one. Davenport would score in all but two of the 7 innings played with the largest output coming in the 5th inning when the Panthers scored 3 of their 7 runs to break the game open.
The battery of
Cam Cooper,
Jason Pierce,
Brandon Bongard, and
Austin Licon combined to go 6 for 14 in game two scoring 4 runs and driving in 4 RBI. Three of those RBI came from the bat of Licon via a 3 run homerun in the 5th inning. The other RBI also came on a homerun, this one a solo homerun by Pierce in the 6th.
The Panther pitching in game two was dominating in comparison to game one. Starter
Jordan Anderson was outstanding from the start as he allowed the Warriors only 5 hits which was minimal in comparison to the 16 the Warriors put up in game one. J. Anderson would finish going 6 innings giving up 5 hits, allowing 3 runs, walking 2, and striking out 9 Warrior hitters.
Corey Anderson would also prove to be tough on the Tech batters as he would close the game going 1 inning allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, giving up no walks, and striking out 1.
