No. 3 Davenport Upset 64-71 by Madonna
Box Score
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On a night in which the four Davenport seniors were honored the Panthers were unable to find a groove offensively and fell 64-71 to Madonna. The loss breaks a ten game win streak over the Crusaders as Davenport is now 23-4 overall and 13-2 in WHAC action.
Davenport never led in the contest and
Karli Harris (21) and
Abby Neff (16) were the only two Panthers to post double-digits in the scoring column.
Right from the opening tip Madonna built an early 7-2 lead and extended it to nine at the 7:06 mark in the first half.
Karli Harris strung together five straight points to bring DU within two, 23-25, with 5:32 to go in the half.
Harris would once again bring DU within two in the final minute but Madonna would respond with a three and a last second jumper to go up seven at halftime, 30-37.
To open the second Davenport came out strong with a 7-2 run behind five points from
Carrie Grubius to bring the score to 37-39 but for every run or key shot Davenport had Madonna was right there to respond.
The Panthers saw the only tie of the ball game fall under four minutes to play which was quickly answered by a three point play from MU and in the end resulted in a 64-71 loss for Davenport.
This is the second conference loss for the Panthers as they will finish their final three regular season games on the road. DU will travel to the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday for a men's and women's doubleheader set to tip-off at 1:00pm.
Post-Game Quotes - Mike Williams
On overall thoughts on game: "We played hard...but defensively we had some breakdowns and they were able to score...Offensively, we are not playing with our heads up and shots just are not falling. We are just not sharp. I do not know if we are pressing too much to win but we are just not sharp."
On what team needs to improve on heading into final 3 game stretch: "Defensively we cannot have breakdowns. We have to do a better job on the offensive glass and we are burying are heads every time we get into the lane. We are hurting ourselves by making bad decisions and bad passes."
