DU Baseball Stumbles versus Bethel

WINTER HAVEN , Fla. - The Panthers opened Russ Matt play today versus the Pilots of Bethel College. It was a beautiful day for baseball in a game played at Chain of Lakes Park, the former spring home of the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, the team allowed a big inning in which Bethel plated five runs and DU fell by the score of 8-4.
The Panthers would trail early as Bethel would plate a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers would even the score during their at-bat in the 3rd inning when
Drew Kennedy lead the inning off with a sharp single. He would be driven to third on a double right back up the middle by
AJ Wentzel . Kennedy would later score on a wild pitch.
Bethel however would answer with two runs in the bottom of the 4th and then a big 5 run bottom of the 5th to stretch their lead over Davenport to 8-1. The inning saw the Panthers commit two errors and face a bases loaded – no outs situation.
The Panthers would rally to within 4 runs as they would plate 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning. With two outs,
Brian Spykerman ripped a single back up the middle. Spykerman would reach second on a
Cam Cooper single to give the Panthers runners at 1st and 2nd.
Brandon Bongard would then supply the power on a triple rocketed down the right field line. Bongard would later score on a wild pitch.
That would be the end of the scoring on the day as the Panthers would shut the Pilots down in the 8th and the Pilots returned the favor, only allowing a base hit by Davenport in the 9th.
