Davenport Routs Calvin to Reach Regional Semifinals

MACOMB, Mich. – Davenport let an early lead go, but responded with big second and third periods to put away Calvin in the teams regional match-up. It was a 2-2 tie after the first period but Davenport scored three in the second and third periods en route to a 8-3 win. Davenport will take on UM-Flint in the regional semifinals tomorrow at 3:00 PM.

Jake Williams got Davenport on the board first netting a goal 8:11 into the period, sending the puck through the Calvin net minders five hole. John Brooks and Aaron Warsen assisted on the goal. Just eleven seconds later, off a nice feed from Jordan Steger, Zack Feher put a shot in the top right corner to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Just as it looked that Davenport was going to break the game open, breakdowns in the Panthers defense allowed Calvin to start their comeback. With just over four minutes left in the first period the Knights got on the board finishing off a breakaway goal to cut the Panthers lead to one. Then with 22 seconds left in the first period, Calvin finished another breakaway opportunity to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

Mike Soto broke the tie just over eight minutes into the second period when Adam Lippert passed the puck backwards for Soto to finish with a slap shot. With 1:14 left in the second period following a quick shot off a Davenport faceoff win, Sam Waldhart tipped in the rebound to extend the Davenport lead to two. Twenty seconds later, Chad Ouellette scored a shorthanded goal to give the Panthers a 5-2 lead through two periods.

The Panthers didn't let up in the third getting a goal by Zachary Bodziak less than five minutes into the period. Garrett Garber was credited with the assist on the goal. Soto and Feher each added a goal down the stretch for the Panthers with a Calvin goal in between.

Davenport will be in action again tomorrow at 3:00 PM against the University of Michigan-Flint in the regional semifinals. Davenport is 2-0 all-time against UM-Flint.

Post-Game Notes

Davenport committed only one penalty and it came in the final minutes of the game…Davenport has won seven of their last eight games…After giving up two goals to end the first period, Davenport scored five unanswered to put away Calvin.
