MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the second consecutive game five Davenport women's basketball players recorded double digits in points and the Lady Panthers opened their road schedule with a 77-67 win over NCAA Division II Northern Michigan Saturday evening to improve to 2-0.
Kia Frazier came up big for the Panthers off the bench as the sophomore led the team with 15 points. She was followed by
Karli Harris with 13,
Leah Sevcik with 12,
Tiesha Stokes with 11 and
Emily Nielsen with 10. Harris also had a productive night in several other categories, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and tallying six assists and steals each.
Davenport only trailed as few as a point early in the first half.
Brianne Woycehoski, Sevcik, Nielsen and Frazier ignited the Panthers to build a 20-12 lead with 15 minutes left. The Wildcats came back and cut the Panthers lead to one with 6:05 left but
Alex Law's 3-pointer helped the Panthers build a five-point lead at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room with a 34-29 lead,
Kendra Cook and Nielsen opened the half nailing 3-pointers to build a nine-point lead, which the highest deficit the Panthers made in the second half. The Wildcats did cut the Panthers lead to 50-49 with 10 minutes left but 3-pointers by Sevcik and Nielsen along with a layup by Stokes gave the Panthers the nine-point lead back and the Wildcats couldn't recover.
The Panthers begin their Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference title defense for the seventh time at home against newcomer Marygrove Saturday at 1 p.m.
