GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's soccer team survived a little scare by Marygrove in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament opener on Halloween night. The top seeded Lady Panthers scored the first two goals of the match but a Mustang goal midway through the second half gave them a sign of life and Davenport's defense held on to win 2-1 and advance to the semifinals.

The Lady Panthers will now host fourth-seed Madonna Saturday at 7 p.m. The Crusaders came off a 2-0 victory over fifth-seed Siena Heights earlier in the day.

Davenport owned all offensive categories on the evening, outshooting Marygrove 24-2, 10-2 on goal, and in corner kicks 7-0.

The Lady Panthers were very aggressive on the attack in the first half, posting 13 shots while preventing the Mustangs from taking one. The Lady Panthers waited patiently for the first goal to come and it did in the 36th minute when Lizzie Paul found Letesha Cannonier at the top of the 18 and a flicker to Paige Eli inside the penalty box for the one-touch shot.

The eventual match-winning goal came in the 62nd minute. Paul broke away from the Mustang defense and although her shot from the right side deflected off Mustang keeper Deanna Lints, Cannonier was able to knock the loose ball into the goal.

After being pressured for a majority of the match, especially in the first half, Marygrove returned the favor midway through the second when a goal in the 65th minute cut the Lady Panthers down to one.

The Panthers had to work hard to keep the ball away from a now offensively aggressive Marygrove while looking for a way to get an insurance goal. But a solid defensive effort led by Michelle Marcus, Ashley Roth, Rickilyn Brummel and Brenna Hartner was enough to hold off the Mustangs to only one goal.
