GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Letesha Cannonier's goal in the first half was more than enough to help the No. 25 Davenport women's soccer team close out the regular-season with the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference championship outright. The sophomore added another goal in the second half and
Lizzie Paul put the match out of reach as the Lady Panthers beat second-place Cornerstone 3-0 on a surprisingly warm Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to taking sole possession of the WHAC crown, the Lady Panthers have earned homefield advantage throughout the conference tournament, which begins next week.
Michelle Marcus had to make five saves while her defenders led by
Ashley Roth made one save to preserve their single-season record 10
th shutout.
Although the Golden Eagles won the shots category 12-9, both teams evened the shots on goals six apiece.
Both teams came close to finding the back of the net early in the first half. In fact, both teams would hit the crossbar. But in the 39th minute, Cannonier made a couple of remarkable touches in the penalty box before her shot rolled underneath Cornerstone goalkeeper Kathy Butt to break the ice.
Cannonier collected the insurance goal in the 52
nd minute.
Karitas Elvarsdottir sent a loose ball back into the goal box where Cannonier was there to make a shot into the left side of the net.
Three minutes later, Tam Gryzbowski dribbled down the left flank before her cross near the goal box bounced once but was high enough for Paul to head in the third goal of the match.
