LAMONI, Iowa - A Jai Maw goal in the second half was not enough to carry the Panthers to an upset of No. 13 Grand View as Davenport fell 3-1 in their season opener. Grand View scored once in the first half and followed with two more in the second to send DU to 0-1 on the year. The Panthers face host Graceland on Saturday.
Facing one of the winningest programs in NAIA men's soccer history, the Panthers had their hands full in their 2011 season opener and the Vikings used a strong first half to hold off a late rally by Davenport to post the 3-1 win.
Grand View, who defeated Davenport 1-0 last season, got on the board first in the opening half in the 39th minute and took that margin with them into the locker room. A goal in the 62nd minute off a header put the Vikings up 2-0 and they added a third with just less than 10 minutes to play.
Davenport, who had numerous chances to put the ball in the net, finally got on the board at 87:02 when Jai Maw scored on a nice feed from Bernard Brnada. It would be the lone goal of the game for DU as they posted 12 shots compared to 14 for their opponents.
"We played well and we had some really good chances, said head coach Carl Whitehouse. Maybe on another day, the decision may have gone our way and we were fortunate to leave the game injury free and the team's performance gives us the confidence to continue in a postive way."
