11 Goal First Quarter Vaults Panthers in MCLA D2 Final Four

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – An 11 goal first quarter by Davenport was more than enough to vault the No. 5 Panthers into their third consecutive MCLA D2 Final Four.  DU defeated No. 4 Briarcliffe 23-10 and will play on Friday at 2:00pm MT inside the Dicks Sporting Goods Stadium.

An 11 goal first quarter was highlighted by three goals each from Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) and Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.) along with a pair from Lyle Parks (Troy, Mich.) and single goals from three other players including Adam Bowers (Lowell, Mich.)Jordan Richtsmeier (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Davenport dominated from the faceoff circle in the first quarter as DU combined to go 9-12 and won the last 8 to take full control of the game. The 11 goals were the most in any quarter for DU in their three years at the tournament and was 4 more than the Panthers had in the entire game in their first meeting with BC.

Starting the second quarter, it was Davenport who still had the momentum but the shots did not go in for them like the first and BC finally got on the scoreboard with 10:45 to play.  Briarcliffe actually outscored the Panthers 3-2 in the second quarter but DU still held a commanding 13-3 lead.

Shawn Beer then started the second half by picking up his fifth goal of the game to increase the Panthers lead back to 11 goals and a Taylor Keyworth goal just seconds later put Davenport up 15-3 with just over 12:00 to play in the third.

The scoring continued with Davenport picking up tallies from Jack Turcotte (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Jordan Richtsmeier, Cody Cross, Lyle Parks as well Beer picking up a few more.

Beer would finish the game with 8 goals as the senior now has 16 goals and 6 assists in the two tournament games this year. Cody Cross and Lyle Parks each finished the game with four goals as Richtsmeier added three along with six assists.

Davenport (16-5) advances to their third straight MCLA D2 Final Four where they will meet the winner of No. 1 Grand Valley State and No. 9 SCAD.  That game will take place on Friday, May 20 inside the Dicks Sporting Goods Stadium at 2:00pm MT (4:00pm EST).
