GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport opened up the CCLA-DII conference tournament in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon, upending the Aquinas Saints by a final score of 25-2. The victory increases DU's record to 3-0 all time against the Saints. With the win, Davenport continues on to face Dayton who defeated Walsh in their matchup.
Jordan Richtsmeier (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) both notched a game-high 6 goals, while Lyle Parks (Troy, Mich.) (3), Jack Turcotte (Grand Rapids, Mich.) (3), and Dominic Boggiano (Grand Rapids, Mich.) (2) had big games. Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Taylor Stark (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Jordy Sayers (Davison, Mich.), and Kyle Stelter (Grand Rapids, Mich.) all added a goal apiece.
The Panthers opened the contest on an 11-0 run, constantly running the field with quick transition passes and maintaining the majority of the possession on the offensive side of the field. Aquinas finally got on the board to break DU's run, however, the Panthers responded with another 9-0 run to remove all hope of a Saint victory.
Goaltenders Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario) and Justin Scott (Canton, Mich.) split time in net, each allowing one goal.
Davenport now will take on the University of Dayton in the CCLA Semifinals. That match will be held at Saline High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at 7:00 p.m. on May 6. Live stats and audio will be provided.
