GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers allowed six runs in the third inning and could not overcome the margin as DU fell 8-5 to the host Calvin Knights on Thursday. Davenport, now 23-13 on the year, travels to WHAC foe Indiana Tech this weekend for a four-game series with the Warriors.

The Panthers took the early lead, 2-0, in the first inning when Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) hit a two-run homer to right field.

The host Knights evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. Calvin used timely singles to push the two runs across home plate.

Calvin pulled ahead and opened a large margin in the third as the Panthers pitching struggled. With the bases loaded for the Knights, a balk call brought in the first run of the inning. After a walk loaded the bases again, a wild pitch scored the Knights second run of the inning for the 4-2 Calvin lead, and, after the Knights scored another tally on a fielders choice, another wild pitch scored the Knight's four run of the third. The Knights added two more runs to take an 8-2 lead through three innings.

The Panthers slowly chipped away at the Knights' lead, scoring one run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, however, the margin Panthers could not get closer than the 8-5 final score.

Matt McNeil finished the game 2-4 with the two-run homerun and an RBI single for a game-high three RBIs. Drew Kennedy (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) also had a strong performance at the plate, hitting 3-4

The Panthers travel to Indiana Tech for doubleheaders tomorrow and Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
