GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On a day that the Panthers raised money for cancer research, it took until game two for the DU bats to warm up giving Davenport the 9-0 victory in five innings after dropping game one 1-0. Brianna Carpenter and Liz Veltman both had two homeruns on the day for Davenport who is now 26-13 on the year and 13-1 in WHAC play.
Game one proved to be a pitchers dual between Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) and Aquinas's Carlie Giarmo in which both teams combined for only five hits in the game. One of AQ's hits was a big one however that sailed over the fence in the top of the fourth to give Aquinas the 1-0 lead.
Davenport would put together a late rally in the bottom of the seventh but would strand runners on second and third and suffer their first loss in the month of April.
Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) and Carpenter would account for DU's only two hits with Cole suffering her first loss on the mound in conference play.
Game two would be a different story for DU as they would put up nine hits with four of those being long balls over the fence. Carpenter would hit the Panthers first grand slam of the year in the third to put DU up 4-0.
Junior Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.) would hit a solo shot in the fourth and then a three-run walk-off in the fifth to seal the 9-0 run rule victory for the Panthers.
Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) would pitch a gem on the mound giving up just two hits in five innings of work, improving her record to 7-1 on the year.
The split today gives DU an overall record of the 26-13 and 13-1 in WHAC play. Davenport will be back in conference action on Friday when the host Madonna for a 4:00pm doubleheader. Both live stats and live audio will be available for both games.
