Men’s Tennis Blanks Grace Bible 9-0; Women Clinch 2nd Seed with Win over Aquinas
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's tennis team dominated Grace Bible 9-0 in their final tune-up for the WHAC Tournament. While the women defeated Aquinas 7-2 to clinch the second seed in the WHAC Tournament. Both WHAC Tournaments begin this weekend with the men taking on Northwestern Ohio and the women in a rematch with Aquinas.
The men's team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The number one doubles team of Jeff Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Matt Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) and the number two doubles team of Vitaly Schumilov (Togliatti, Russia) and Eric Pell (Caledonia, Mich.) each won their doubles matches 8-0. Tyler Chambers (Rockford, Mich.) and Chris Grashorn (Rockford, Mich.) defeated Grace Bible's third doubles team 8-1 to give Davenport a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches.
Shumilov, Weiden, Chambers and Jerome Jayapal (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Jeff Karasinski defeated Casey Duke 6-1, 6-0 in the number one singles match. Eric Pell won his singles match 6-1, 6-2.
The women's team wrapped up the second seed in the WHAC Tournament with a 7-2 win over Aquinas. Diana Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and Denisse Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) won their doubles match 9-7. The number two doubles team of Stephanie Fortney (Allegan, Mich.) and Erin Hossack (Dearborn, Mich.) came out of their doubles match with a 8-4 win. The team of Kristi Kuzdal (Grandville, Mich.) and Kelly Todd (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fell in their doubles match 4-8.
The Favela sisters made quick work in their singles matches with both dropping only three games in the straight set wins. Stephanie Fortney pulled out a 7-5 win in the opening set of her match before taking the second set 6-2. Kristi Kuzdal fell in straight sets 4-6, 4-6 in the number four singles match. Erin Hossack and Kelly Todd each won in straight sets for Davenport.
Davenport's men's tennis team will take on Northwestern Ohio in the semifinals of the WHAC Tournament on Friday at 9:00 AM with the winner advancing to the Championship match on Saturday at 9:00 AM. The Women will have a rematch with Aquinas in their semifinal on Friday at 12:00 PM. The winner of this match will advance to the Championship match on Saturday at 9:00 AM.
