Panthers Begin Florida Trip with Sweep of Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Lady Panthers earned their first two victories of the season with a 6-4 and 10-1 (5) doubleheader sweep of Webber International. Senior Cirina Jones led DU on the day going 3-4 with 5 RBI's to improve DU's record to 2-5 on the year.
In game one Davenport struck first in the top of the third with back to back RBI singles from
Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) and
Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.). Webber would answer back themselves in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to take back the 3-2 lead.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth Davenport would put together a rally in the sixth. Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) and Lindsey Allen (Midland, Mich.) would start the inning with back to back singles to put runners on first and third with no outs. Allen would then advance to second on a pass ball to put two runners in scoring position. Cirina Jones (Middleton, Mich.) would then send a ball over the right center fence for a three-run homerun, her first of the season.
Up 5-3, Davenport would add an insurance run in the sixth off another single from Egyhazi. Webber would add a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh but the DU defense would regroup and shut down their offense for the 6-4 victory.
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) would earn her first victory of the year on the mound allowing just six hits with two strike outs in seven complete innings. Egyhazi would finish the game a perfect 3-3 with six other Panthers recording hits in the game as well.
Davenport would use the momentum from game one to put together two runs in the second inning, six in the third, and then another two in the fifth to build a 10-0 lead in game two. Webber would push across one run of their own in the bottom of the fourth but the Panthers nine run lead would be good enough for a 10-1 run ruled game after the fifth inning.
Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) would lead DU from the plate in game two going a 2-3 with 3 RBI's in the game along with Cirina Jones who would finish 2-2 with a walk and two RBI's as well.
Freshman Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.) and Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) would record their first career hits along with Brianna Carpenter connecting for her first homerun of the season.
Carpenter would throw five complete innings giving up just four hits with three strikeouts in the shorten game to earn her first victory of the year as well.
Davenport is now 2-5 on the year and will take on another Florida native in Warner University tomorrow. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:00pm at Warner with live stats and live audio available at www.dupanthers.com.
