AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Game One) - The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never trailed the rest of the game en route to a 7-2 victory over Brandeis University Wednesday. The win is the second straight over Brandeis for Davenport and ups their overall record to 3-3 on the season.
Playing in their first game of the day, DU scored early when junior Derrick Gentile's single brought home leadoff hitter Chris VanGessel from second base for an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gentile would not stay on the bags long as a Dan Brown single allowed him to touch home plate. Matt McNeil added to the scoring when his sacrifice fly to center let Joe Freist tag up from third, increasing the Panther margin to 3-0.
Brandeis would try to close the gap in the second inning, scoring two runs to close to within one run at 3-2, but the Panthers would add to their lead in the third inning as a fly out to centerfield by Jordan Bigger scored Freist. Another sac fly, this time off the bat of Travis Laver, brought in Rob Bolster for a 5-2 Panther lead.
DU was not done, adding two more runs in the seventh inning. Brown tallied his second RBI of the game when his single scored Brandon Bongard, and pinch hitter Mike Allen singled in Colton Loomis for the final score of 7-2.
Drew Kennedy picked up his first win of the season, pitching seven innings for the Panthers.
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Panthers picked up their second win of the day in their second city, defeating Southeastern University 6-5 Wednesday night after holding off a late Fire rally.
DU would put the first run on the scoreboard when catcher Mike Allen's RBI single brought home Dan Brown.
A throwing error by the Fire's catcher would allow Rob Bolster to score an unearned run in the fifth inning. Chris VanGessel scored on a Derrick Gentile sac fly in the same inning to up the Panther lead to 3-0 through the top half of the fifth.
Southeastern University would match DU, scoring two runs of their own to keep the game close at 3-2 Panthers.
Patience at the plate helped the Panthers in the sixth, when Bolster walked to load up the bases for the Panthers. The second walk in a row, this time by VanGessel, would bring Joe Freist from third. With the bases still loaded, Brandon Bongard's single would drive in two more runs for the Panthers to up the DU lead to 6-2.
Davenport would hang on for the win from there, allowing one Fire run in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final score of 6-5.
