GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport was unable to overcome an early deficit today as they fell 3-1 to visiting Siena Heights in the quarterfinals of the WHAC tournament. The loss ends the Panthers' 2011 season with an overall record of 4-10-5 as they fail to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time in school history.
For much of the first half, Davenport possessed the ball well. However, they were only able to register one shot on net. Then in the 29
th minute, the Saints took advantage of their first scoring opportunity. A through ball was played to Saints striker Jason Uribe who poked the ball out of the reach of goal keeper
Jordan Bandstra and into the back of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Davenport began the 2
nd half down 1-0, but put a lot of pressure on the Saints defense. SHU keeper Lucas Sagaert made an outstanding save in the 59
th minute to keep Davenport off the score board. A loose ball rolled out to the feet of Rich Visser who quickly fired a shot on goal, but was denied by a diving save.
A minute later, Davenport finally put one by the Saints keeper.
Stuart Collins made a great move to get by a Saints defender and placed a shot in the lower right corner to tie the game 1-1 with 30 minutes to play in regulation.
Unfortunately, in the 74
th minute, Siena Heights took the lead for good. The Saints put a corner kick deep into the box and headed the ball back to the front of the net where Joe Deneweth put the ball in on a one touch.
Being down a goal Davenport started to move more players up into the offensive zone, as they tried to get the equalizing goal. In the final minute Davenport was awarded a free kick right outside the box. The Panthers packed almost every player into the box. The ensuing kick was blocked by the Saints wall and the started a counter attack. Saints striker Doug Dawson was all alone with Bandstra just past half and tapped it around him to give the Saints their third and final goal.

We again had good possession and plenty of scoring opportunities in the quarterfinal game against Siena Heights…The final score was a little harsh, although the Saints deserved to move on to the semifinal round for their hard work and battling performance.
