COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 19 ranked Columbia Cougars posted two first half goals on Saturday night and it was just enough to pull out a 2-1 win over Davenport. The loss drops the Panthers to 4-7-4 on the year as they will face McKendree University on Sunday.
Davenport's grueling road schedule continued on Saturday night as they took on the NAIA No. 19th ranked Cougars of Columbia College. Two first half goals were enough for the home team to take away the 2-1 victory as they celebrated senior night.
Columbia struck in the 10th and 24th minutes to post a 2-0 lead going into the locker room at halftime. Parker Rawdon and Liam Cain were credited with the goals for the Cougars (14-2-1 overall). Davenport upped their pressure in the second half and broke through at the 53:13 mark when a ball sent in by
Stuart Collins was touched by
Jai Maw and then a CC defender past the Cougar keeper.
The goal was ruled an own goal but the margin had been cut in half. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not break through over the remaining 37 minutes as they fell by the one goal.
Post-Match Quotes -
Richard Visser and
Jesse Asanin-Miroux
Visser - "We started off very slow, but after they scored their second goal we really tightened up. Coming into the second half we were by far the better team, we out possessed them and had some real good scoring opportunities. If we play the way we did in the second half, we should have a good result tomorrow"
Asanin-Miroux - "They really came out strong and were very technical. We gave them two goals in the first half, but we were dominating them for most of the half. At half time, we knew who their strong players were, as well as their game plan. We dominated the second half, but came up short of one goal. As
Richard Visser said "if we play the way we did in the second half, we should have a good result tomorrow".
