GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport D3 hockey team took to the ice Friday night at Patterson Ice Center against the Pioneers of Delta College. This contest marked the eighth ever meeting between the two programs and it would be made memorable because of penalties.
The Panthers were on the attack early and often in the first stanza as they dominated the Pioneers with strong early pressure. Puck control and time of possession in the offensive zone led to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Davenport struck first on the power-play with a goal from
Ben Duthler with assists coming from
John Brooks and
Sam Waldhart. The second goal and subsequent game winner was the only full strength goal netted in the game, this one by
Bryon Guerin with an assist by
Aaron Warsen.
Second period was sponsored by the penalty as DU took to the penalty kill six times while Delta College took to the penalty kill 3 times. Davenport weathered the storm of penalties much better by killing all 6 of their shorthanded opportunities while scoring 2 power-play goals. The third goal for DU was scored by
Aaron Warsen and assisted by
Ben Duthler. The Panther's fourth goal came just twenty seconds later off the stick of
Bryon Guerin with an assist from
Chad Ouellette.
The Pioneers got on the board in the third with a shorthanded goal from J. Henne to bring the score to 4-1 Panthers. However, DU answered quickly with a power-play goal from
Mike Soto to stretch the Panther lead back to 4 goals. Panther net minder
Andrew Habasevich was solid, stopping all but one of the shots he faced all night from the sticks of the Pioneers.
DU would go on to win with a final score of 6-1 over Delta College. The Panthers would finish the game with five of their six goals coming on the power-play.

Asked about any special preparations taken in practice the last couple days Green said, “We have worked hard the past few days on drilling for the advantage.
