GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The D3 hockey team had four different players record hat-tricks in a record setting 24-1 win over Delta College on Sunday evening. The win is the sixth in a row for head coach
Chris Green and the Panthers as they prepare for a grueling weekend that features games at Saginaw Valley and vs. Farmingdale State.
After a convincing 7-2 win over Lawrence Tech to start the second semester, the Panthers wasted no time on Sunday evening picking up their second win of the weekend. Delta College came into the game having no true goalie in net and it showed in the lop-sided loss.
Davenport scored eight goals in the first, nine in the second and seven more in the third for the final outcome of 24-1. Delta recorded their lone goal late in the first period.
Four different DU players posted hat-tricks as
Garrett Russell (Midland, Mich.),
Mike Soto (Muskegon, Mich.),
Chad Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) and
Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.)also lit the lamp three times. Welker posted the most points (6) for Davenport as the senior finished with three assists to go along with the goals.
The 24 goals in a game sets a new school record besting the old mark by almost double. The Panthers previous record was 14 in a 14-1 win over Jackson CC earlier this season.
Davenport returns to the ice on Friday in University Center when they play a very important matchup against two-time defending ACHA D3 champion Saginaw Valley State. The two teams have split their two-game series thus far and the game will be the first of three for DU over the weekend.
Davenport will also take on Farmingdale State and Southern Connecticut State out east on a long road trip. DU will then return home on January 21 and 22 to take on IPFW.
