UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Zach Standifer and
Mike Soto recorded their first ever goals in a Panther uniform as they led the D-3 hockey team to a 5-2 win at Delta College on Sunday. Davenport is now 2-0 on the year with their next game schedule for Friday at Detroit Mercy.
After a wild opening 9-6 win over Adrian on Saturday night, the Panthers returned to the ice and got off to a fast start on Sunday behind three straight goals from
Zach Standifer (Monroe, Mich.),
Sam Waldhart (Walker, Mich.)t and
Jordan Steger (Caledonia, Mich.). Delta added a late even strength goal cut the margin to just two but Davenport carried the momentum with them to the second period.
The Panthers came out flying again early in the second and got the first goal off the stick of
Mike Soto to push the lead back to three goals.
Ben Duthler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and
John Brooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) were credited with the assist.
After Delta again scored a late goal to make it 4-2 DU after two, the Panthers put it away in the final 20 minutes when
Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.) scored on assists from Soto and
Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
Davenport will next be in action on Friday when they travel to Detroit Mercy.
