GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing for the first time at home during the 2010 campaign, the Lady Panthers shrugged off a slow start to defeat Siena Heights 3-0 in a WHAC matchup. Davenport is now 10-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.
After road trips to Indiana, Wisconsin and throughout the state of Michigan, the Lady Panthers got to finally play in the Student Center today and picked up their 10th win of the season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16).
The visiting Saints got out to a fast start with a 6-0 run to open the first set forcing DU into a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Siena missed their serve as DU was off and running but still could not pull even with the Saints until an error on the SHU side made the score 11-11. Slowly DU put together some solid runs and held a 20-18 lead after a kill from
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.).
Siena would not back down though and evened up the game at 20 but DU finished off the Saints with five straight points behind the serving of
Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.) DU also collected four straight kills from
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.),
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.),
Joyce Larioza (Fowlerville, Mich.) and Graves to win 25-20.
The second set started just as the first one finished with DU putting together a 3-0 run to open and followed it with a 6-1 run to take a 9-2 lead. The margin never got any closer than four for the remainder of the set as DU pushed their lead to 2-0 heading to the break after a 25-14 win.
The Lady Panthers finished off the Saints in set three as they won 25-16 while hitting at a .214 clip but more importantly limited their opposition to just eight kills with nine errors for a -.034%.
Leading a very balanced offense once again for DU was sophomore
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.) who finished with eight kills. Fellow sophomore
Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) and freshman
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.) posted six each while senior
Joyce Larioza (Fowlerville, Mich.) posted four.
Kayla Vandermolen's (Cedar Springs, Mich.) 26 assists and
Courtney DePriest's (Grand Rapids, Mich.) 15 digs were the other stat leaders for Davenport as they improve to 10-6 on the year and 2-1 in the WHAC.
The Lady Panthers will travel to Cornerstone on Tuesday to take on the Golden Eagles at 7:00pm.
