KENTWOOD, Mich. - 10 homeruns from the #18 ranked team in the country was too much for Davenport today as they were swept by Madonna 7-2 and 17-5. Davenport is now 12-16 on the year and 3-3 in league action. The two teams will battle again on Sunday at East Kentwood HS beginning in the first game at 1:00 PM.

Game one started out how much of the day would unfold as the Crusaders put up four runs on two long balls and added three more in the second inning. DU did manage to keep fighting though as Wesley Trimpe (Kentwood, Mich.) was solid in relief.

The sophomore middle-reliever came in to pitch in the top of the 3rd and went four innings while allowing just four hits and striking out one.

Davenport's bats remained quiet for most of the game until they had a few rallies late but were unable to cash in with runners in scoring position. DU got both runs from Dan Brown (Bay City, Mich.) as he, Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and Joe Hill (Tecumseh, Mich.) accounted for the only hits for the Panthers.

Andy Westerburg (Spring Lake, Mich.) took the loss giving up all seven runs in the opening two frames on 7 hits and two walks.

Hoping for at least a split on the day, DU sent Zak Gonzalez (Comstock Park, Mich.) to the mound in game two and although the junior gave up three runs in the opening three innings, was fairly solid until the top of the 5th.

The Panthers got a big boost in the bottom of the third when Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) hit a three-run shot to give Davenport a 4-3 lead.

The lead was short-lived however as Madonna's bats exploded with two outs in the bottom of the 5th as the #18 ranked Crusaders brought home nine runs to take a 12-4 lead. DU got one back in the bottom half of the inning but Madonna added five more in the 6th to take a commanding 17-5 lead which would end play after six innings.

Madonna accounted for seven homeruns in the second game while DU managed just eight hits as Gonzalez was tagged for his second loss of the season.

Davenport is now 12-16 on the year and 3-3 in league action. The Panthers will again host the Crusaders on Sunday beginning with the first pitch at 1:00 PM in the doubleheader at East Kentwood HS.
