GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a matchup with her former team, Head Coach Ronda Varnesdeel almost led the Panthers to an upset of WHAC undefeated Aquinas College. Unforunately, DU gave up three runs in the top of the 7th to lose 6-3 and then lost 3-0 in the second game to fall to 15-16 on the year.
In game one, Davenport took charge behind the strong pitching from Karlee Despres in the early going and the Panthers were the first to strike on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third wen Katie Cornman got things started with a single and was then advanced to second on a sac bunt by Morgan Greenfield.
After Jodi Steenwyk was hit by a pitch, Haley Stehouwer brought home Cornman for a 1-0 lead. Ali Dawson then deliverd a two-out single which brought home both Steenwyk and Stehouwer for a 3-0 Davenport lead.
The lead would start to dwindle though the following inning as Aquinas cut the lead to just 3-1 before adding two more in the fifth to tie the game. Davenport did put up a threat in the 6th but the wheels came off in the top of the seventh when Aquinas brought home three unearned runs to take the first game 6-3.
Game two was a great pitchers battle but three costly mistakes by Kassi Johnson led to all of the Saints runs via the long ball. Davenport's bats never got going as Katie Cornman and Sandi Seaman provided the only two hits for the Panthers.
On the day, Katie Cornman went 4-5 with a run scored and Haley Stehouwer also posted two hits in the two games. Ali Dawson provided the offensive lift in game one with the two RBI.
The two losses drop DU to 15-16 on the year and 0-8 in the WHAC. They will look to post their first ever win in conference play on Friday when they host Concordia University at 4:00 PM in a double-header. They will also be at home on Saturday when they welcome Siena Heights.
